ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced Thursday (May 29) the hiring of Derek Satterfield as the public and media relations director for the Wolverine football program. Satterfield will hold the title of Director of Football Public and Media Relations.
Satterfield joins Michigan Athletics after spending four years as an assistant communications director at the University of Arkansas. While in Fayetteville, he was the primary contact for the football team. Satterfield handled all of the day-to-day football communications duties for the Razorbacks, including daily interaction with head coach Bret Bielema, assistant coaches and student-athletes.
In addition to his football duties, Satterfield stepped in as the baseball contact for a portion of the 2014 season. He was a member of the Senior Management Team in the communications office. Satterfield supervised the swimming and diving and men's tennis contacts and managed all content for assigned sports on ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
Before joining the Arkansas Athletic Department, Satterfield worked in the Big Ten Conference at Purdue University (Jan. 2009-Aug. 2010). He was the main contact for women's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's tennis. Satterfield hosted two Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships and the 2010 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships during his tenure. He also handled the publicity efforts for David Boudia, a two-time national and conference diver of the year and an Olympian.
Satterfield spent the 2008 season as an intern with the Indianapolis Colts.
He started in the public relations profession as a four-year student intern at the University of Tennessee (Aug. 2004-June 2008). Satterfield served as the main contact for men's track and field and cross country. He graduated from Tennessee in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management with a minor in business.
Satterfield will start his new position at Michigan on June 9.
