ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football senior quarterback Denard Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) and senior/junior running back Fitzgerald Toussaint (Youngstown, Ohio/Liberty) have been named as two of 65 players on the 2012 watch list for the 76th annual Maxwell Award, presented to the most outstanding college football player.
Six other Big Ten Conference players were named to the watch list, while the Wolverines were the only Big Ten team to have multiple players selected. Robinson was a semifinalist for the award in 2010 and was named to the watch list prior to the 2011 season.
Robinson and Toussaint helped lead Michigan to an 11-2 record and an Allstate Sugar Bowl victory in 2011. Last season, they were the only teammates in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to surpass 1,000 rushing yards, and they became U-M's first pair of 1,000-yard rushers since 1975 (Gordon Bell, 1,388; Rob Lytle, 1,030). Robinson led the Wolverines with 1,176 rushing yards, while Toussaint gained 1,041.
Robinson also passed for 2,173 yards and finished 2011 with a career-best 36 touchdowns (20 passing, 16 rushing).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be named Oct. 29, and three finalists will be announced on Nov. 19. The winner will be named on Dec. 6 as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show.
The Maxwell Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The NCFAA and its members are unveiling their preseason watch lists over a 12-day period in July. Fifteen of the association's 21 awards select a preseason watch list.
