ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan sophomore tight end Devin Funchess (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) has been named to the 2013 John Mackey Award preseason watch list, the organization announced today (Tuesday, July 9).
Funchess is among six Big Ten Conference players and 37 overall candidates listed for the award that goes to the nation's most outstanding tight end. Funchess started five games in 2012, totaling 15 receptions for 234 yards and five touchdowns. For his efforts, he was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.
Funchess had four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown against Air Force on Sept. 8, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. With his performance, Funchess became the ninth Wolverines freshman to register a 100-yard receiving game and the first U-M tight end to surpass the 100-yard mark since Jerame Tuman in 1997.
Funchess' five touchdown catches in 2012 tied for fourth most in Michigan football history by a tight end. His first five catches of the season all marked 20 yards or more, while the first six receptions all converted first downs.
Semifinalists for the John Mackey Award will be named Nov. 18, and finalists will be announced on Nov. 25. The winner will be named on Dec. 12 as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show.
