ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) was one of 50 players across the nation named to the 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year Preseason Watch List on Friday (July 18).
Funchess, who has also been included on watch lists for the Biletnikoff Award and the Maxwell Award, moves to wide receiver in 2014 after appearing in the first 26 games of his career at tight end. Last season, he was named the Big Ten Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year and a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award in addition to earning first team All-Big Ten acclaim after hauling in 49 catches for 748 yards and six touchdowns. His receiving yards were the highest single-season total by a U-M tight end in program history. In his career, Funchess has 64 receptions for 982 yards and 11 touchdowns. He enters the 2014 season having caught at least one pass in 14 straight games.
Funchess is one of eight players from the Big Ten Conference on the preseason watch list. He is also one of only eight receivers nationally on the list.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year Preseason Watch List will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in mid-November. The 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, Dec. 11. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation's annual national awards banquet on Jan. 17, 2015 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Conn.
