CHICAGO, Ill. -- University of Michigan football senior/junior quarterback Devin Gardner (Detroit, Mich./Inkster HS) and fifth-year senior left tackle Taylor Lewan (Cave Creek, Ariz./Chaparral HS) are among 10 players that have been selected to the Big Ten Players to Watch list, the conference announced today (Wednesday, July 24).
The preseason Big Ten Players to Watch list is selected by a media panel and consists of five student-athletes from the Legends Division and Leaders Division. Michigan is one of only two teams (Ohio State) to have multiple players selected to the list.
Gardner appeared in 13 games in 2012, beginning the season as a wide receiver before finishing the final five games at quarterback. He completed 75-of-126 passes for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions, while rushing 47 times for 101 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught 16 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns.
Gardner accounted for at least two touchdowns in each of his five games at quarterback last season and earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors twice. He also has been selected to the 2013 preseason watch lists for the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Awards.
Lewan, who also was named to the 2013 national watch lists for the Outland Trophy and the Maxwell, Rotary Lombardi and Walter Camp Player of the Year Awards, has started 35 career games at left tackle, including 28 consecutive.
Lewan was a 2012 All-America first team choice by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, Associated Press, ESPN.com and SI.com. He also was named the Big Ten Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year and was an All-Big Ten first team choice by the league's coaches and media during his junior campaign.
