ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) was one of 10 recognized Monday (July 28) as a Big Ten Player to Watch for the 2014 season.
Funchess, who has been included on preseason watch lists for the Biletnikoff Award, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year, moves to wide receiver in 2014 after appearing in the first 26 games of his career at tight end.
Last season, he was named the Big Ten Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year and a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award in addition to earning first team All-Big Ten acclaim after hauling in 49 catches for 748 yards and six touchdowns. His receiving yards were the highest single-season total by a U-M tight end in program history. In his career, Funchess has 64 receptions for 982 yards and 11 touchdowns. He enters the 2014 season having caught at least one pass in 14 straight games.
Funchess is one of five from the East Division selected by the media panel as announced on the first day of Big Ten Media Days. The Wolverines begin practice Aug. 4 in preparation for the season opener against Appalachian State in Michigan Stadium on Aug. 30.
