Wolverines Begin 2001 Ranked 10th in Coaches Poll

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team will begin the 2001 season right where it finished in the coaches' eyes last season, as the Wolverines are ranked 10th in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll released late yesterday (Thursday, Aug. 2). The Wolverines received 846 points to rank 10th in the poll and were given one first-place vote.

Florida tops the preseason poll with 1,401 total points and 25 first-place votes. The remainder of the top five includes No. 2 Miami (Fla.), defending national champion and No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 Nebraska and No. 5 Florida State. Besides the Wolverines, the Big Ten Conference is represented by No. 20 Northwestern, No. 21 Ohio State and No. 23 Wisconsin.

Michigan opens its 122nd season of gridiron action on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Miami University (Ohio) at Michigan Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPN Regional Television beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
