ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan athletics deparment announced today (Thursday, Aug. 30) the launching of the "Michigan Football Virtual Tailgate" Facebook application. The new application, presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, will include differentiated game day and non-game day interfaces, providing fans with two unique online experiences.
"The Michigan Football Virtual Tailgate application will be the new second screen for Michigan football fans around the world," said Jordan Maleh, director of digital marketing for U-M Athletics. "Instead of the notion of multiple screens being open every Saturday, the application will bring together features to make the fans' viewing experience and social interactions much stronger and seamless."
On game day, the Michigan Football Virtual Tailgate application will present a "Virtual Fan Map," allowing fans the opportunity to find and connect with other Michigan football fans based on their U-M status (alumni, student, fan) through the fan's respective tailgate/viewing location, college or graduating class. On game day, users will have the opportunity to participate in a live chat, follow a Twitter stream featuring fan tweets including the hashtag #GoBlue, upload and share game day photos through Instagram, listen to each game live with free game audio, and follow each play with GameTracker.
"Alumni around the world gather together, in person and virtually, to watch Michigan football," said Tonja Deegan, digital marketing manager for the Alumni Association. "By teaming with Michigan Athletics on Facebook, we give our more than half a million alumni a unique way to share their pride."
The non-game day experience will include a countdown to kickoff for the upcoming game, including the opportunity to invite Facebook friends to the next Virtual Tailgate. A Fan Tracker will count the total number of fans who have joined the Virtual Tailgate during the 2012 season, with the opportunity for fans to win Michigan football prizes as certain capacity thresholds are reached. The non-game day experience also will house information from the previous game, as well as links to photo galleries, postgame quotes and game notes, and upcoming game previews.
The Michigan Football Virtual Tailgate will be available on mobile browswers (HTML5 enabled) on Saturday, Sept. 15, when Michigan hosts Massachusetts. The Michigan Football Virtual Tailgate Facebook application and mobile site were designed and developed by Movement Strategy.
