ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- This week's pre-practice meeting with the media was held under sunny skies on the back practice field at Schembechler Hall. Almost as popular a topic as the starting quarterback, coach Rich Rodriguez was immediately asked about injuries and who is expected to play. Rodriguez said junior wide receiver Greg Mathews will see action against Notre Dame this Saturday but offensive lineman Mark Ortmann will not. Junior/sophomores Perry Dorrestein and Bryant Nowicki will likely play in his absence.

With a 40 percent chance of showers in South Bend, Rodriguez talked about trying to practice in wet conditions when southeast Michigan has had one of its driest spells. The coach said they try to simulate wet playing conditions by getting the balls wet, but obviously it's not quite the same.

The Wolverines will bus to South Bend on Friday afternoon. They will go directly to Notre Dame Stadium for their walk-through before heading to the hotel for the rest of the evening.

Senior/junior punter Zoltan Mesko was nominated for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award. A student in U-M's Ross School of Business, Mesko carries a grade-point average of better than 3.5.
