ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football sophomore tight end Devin Funchess (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison HS) was named today (Wednesday, Oct. 9) as the John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week for his career-best performance in Michigan's 42-13 victory last Saturday against Minnesota.
Funchess established new career highs in receptions and receiving yards against the Golden Gophers, finishing U-M's Big Ten opener with seven catches for 151 yards and one touchdown. The sophomore tight end posted four receptions of more than 20 yards against Minnesota -- three of which came on third down -- on his way to recording his second career 100-plus-yard receiving effort.
Funchess, who earned Freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) in 2012, ranks first among Big Ten tight ends in receiving yards per game (59.2 avg.). His 15 catches through five games match his number of receptions from last season, while his 296 receiving yards already surpass his 2012 output (234 yards).
Michigan returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 12), facing Penn State in State College, Pa. Kickoff is set for 5:01 p.m. on ESPN.
