Foote garnered Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Washington (Sept. 9), when he amassed 12 tackles, including a school-record-tying six tackles for loss. Foote leads a Wolverine defensive unit that ranks third nationally and leads the Big Ten against the run (52.7 yards per game) and is the conference leader in sacks (25).
An All-Big Ten first-team selection last year, Foote is a three-time letterman and two-year starter for the Wolverines. He leads the team with 166 career tackles and 32 TFLs, while contributing six sacks, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 12 PBUs in 42 games of action. Foote has started 22 career games for the Wolverines at inside linebacker.
The 2001 Butkus Award is voted upon by a 29-member media selection committee. The group of 12 semifinalists was culled from a watch list of 69 linebackers. Three finalists will be selected on Thursday, Nov. 15, and the winner will be named on Friday, Dec. 7. More information on the award and selection process is featured at www.butkusaward.org.
