ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department will honor America's former and current military service men and women on Saturday, Nov. 6, during the football game against Illinois.
As part of the Military Appreciation event, Team Red White Blue, a veteran support organization based in Ann Arbor, will be joining forces with the Michigan Athletic Department to host a donation drive for troops overseas as well as Afghan families. Fans are encouraged to bring goods to donate and drop them off at donation locations outside of Gates 2 and 8 at Michigan Stadium the day of the game.
Requested items for soldiers include black socks, deodorant, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, gum, protein bars, Ramen noodles, canned meat, trail mix, and new or used DVDs or video games.
Requested items for the Afghan families include new or used winter clothing, coats, hats, and gloves, Michigan clothing, pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, children's books, generic bifocal lenses, blankets, and small toys or stuffed animals.
There will also be a craft station at the Michigan Athletics kiosk in the south end of the stadium. It will be set up in the grassy area of the concourse where fans can make handwritten cards and letters to send to the troops.
Tim Hortons, the official coffee of Michigan Athletics, has agreed to donate one cup of its premium blend coffee to the troops for every item donated by fans, up to 720 pounds, which is around 46,000 cups of coffee.
For those who would like to donate but do not plan on attending the game, a donation center will be set up in the lobby of the Michigan Athletic Ticket Office at 1000 S. State St. Donations may be dropped off between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. beginning Monday (Nov. 1) and running through Friday (Nov. 5).
Monetary donations will not be accepted the day of the game. Cash or check donations may be made payable to Team RWB Homemade Drive and mailed to Team RWB, 360 Sedgewood Lane, Ann Arbor, MI, 48103. The funds raised will be used to send homemade baked goods to troops overseas in time for the holidays.
