Military Appreciation Day, Care Package Drive Scheduled in November

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletics Department will honor America's past and present military men and women on Saturday, Nov. 19, during the football game against Nebraska. In addition, the men's basketball program will hold a care package drive and honor servicemen and women at its game against Ferris State on Friday, Nov. 11.

Football vs. Nebraska (Nov. 19)
For the football Military Appreciation event, Michigan Gold Star families and University of Michigan staff and student veterans have been invited to a special pregame tailgate at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The Michigan Marching Band's pregame performance will pay tribute to the armed services with a medley of military songs from each of the branches. The pregame ceremonies will conclude with a military flyover at the end of the national anthem.

Men's Basketball vs. Ferris State (Nov. 11)
All current and former military members are eligible to receive a discounted rate of $11 total for four tickets. Eligible individuals can order tickets online at MGoBlue.com/tickets and enter the promotion code UM4VETS.

Additionally, at the Nov. 11 game the team will be hosting its third annual care package drive in conjunction with the University of Michigan Student Veterans Association. Donations can be dropped off at Crisler Arena in the concourse near Gate E, Gate A or Gate B.

Preferred donation items include:

  1. Black/white socks
  2. Deodorant
  3. Men's boxers/briefs and undershirts (all sizes)
  4. Gum
  5. Protein bars
  6. Canned chicken/tuna and ramen noodles
  7. Handwritten letters
  8. Hot chocolate mix
  9. Magazines (non-pornographic)
  10. Granola bars
  11. Dried fruit/Chex mix
  12. Baby wipes
  13. Chapstick
  14. Batteries
  15. Crossword puzzle/word search books
  16. Gas cards (for vets moving to and from VA hospital)
  17. $5-$10 gift cards to restaurants, Target, Walmart, Meijer, etc. (for homeless vets)
  18. Snack kits for homeless vets (put in a Ziploc bag)
      -- Roll of lifesavers (or other hard candy -- non-melting)
      -- Granola bar, Rice Krispies bar, etc.
      -- Plastic utensils (knife, fork, spoon with napkin)
      -- Ritz snack mix, trail mix, etc.
      -- Easy-open can of tuna or other canned meat
