ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior defensive lineman Will Heininger (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) of the University of Michigan football team was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District V team for NCAA Division I football, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday (Nov. 10).
First-team selections from each of the eight districts advance to the Academic All-America ballot; the national team will be announced Thursday, Dec. 8.
Enrolled in the School of Kinesiology, Heininger is majoring in sport management with a minor in economics. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree (2008, '09, '10) and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (2009, '10).
Heininger has started all nine games for the Wolverines this season, with seven starts at defensive tackle and two at defensive end. He has set career highs for tackles (16) and tackles for loss (4) and notched his first solo sack last week at Iowa. In 29 career games Heininger has earned 29 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks and two pass breakups.
To be nominated for Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution and must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games. District V includes schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
