PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior quarterback Devin Gardner (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in U-M's 42-17 victory over Iowa last Saturday, while linebacker James Ross III (Orchard Lake, Mich./Saint Mary's Prep) earned Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honors for his play against the Hawkeyes, the conference announced today (Monday, Nov. 19). It marks Gardner's second consecutive Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honor, while it is the first conference award for Ross III.

Gardner led the Wolverines to six consecutive touchdown drives to begin the game against Iowa. He completed 18 of 23 passes for a career-high 314 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed nine times for 37 yards and three touchdowns. Gardner became the first Michigan player to score six touchdowns in a game since Steve Smith threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three scores at Minnesota in 1983. He also became only the sixth player in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 2000 to throw for 300 yards, pass for three touchdowns and rush for three scores in the same game.

In three games as starting quarterback, Gardner has completed 46 of 70 passes for 834 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions, and rushed 28 times for 105 yards and six touchdowns in wins over Minnesota, Northwestern and Iowa.

Ross III had a team and season-best 12 tackles, including nine solo stops, to lead the Wolverines defense. The 12 tackles mark the most by a Wolverines defender this season. Ross III is the second U-M freshman to earn conference honors in 2012. Tight end Devin Funchess (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors following U-M's 31-25 victory over Air Force on Sept. 8.

No. 20 Michigan (8-3, 6-1 Big Ten) travels to face No. 4 Ohio State (11-0, 7-0 Big Ten) on Saturday at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:07 p.m. The game will be televised on ABC.
