ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan athletic director Bill Martin announced today (Tuesday, Dec. 3) that the football team has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2003 Outback Bowl on New Year's Day. The Wolverines (9-3, 6-2 Big Ten) will face the University of Florida Gators of the Southeastern Conference in Tampa, with the 11 a.m. EST contest to be televised by ESPN.

"We are excited about the opportunity to represent the Big Ten Conference in the Outback Bowl," said Martin. "Our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and fans look forward to the trip to Tampa. This should be an outstanding game against a tough Florida team.

"Our fans are encouraged to order tickets early through the Athletic Ticket Office to ensure seating with Michigan family and friends. We want to make Raymond James Stadium as Maize and Blue as possible."

This will be the fourth time that the Wolverines have played in Tampa. U-M played in the Hall of Fame Bowl twice (1988 and 1994) and participated in the 1997 Outback Bowl during head coach Lloyd Carr's second season.

"I think the Michigan-Florida Outback Bowl matchup is one that every college football fan will be excited to see," Carr commented. "We're excited to have the opportunity to play on New Year's Day in a great setting. We're looking forward to it."

U-M will be playing its seventh consecutive New Year's Day bowl game during Carr's eight-year tenure and will be looking for its fifth Jan. 1 bowl game victory in the last six tries. The Wolverines are making their 28th consecutive bowl appearance and 33rd overall, and are second only to Nebraska in consecutive bowl appearances.
