LIVONIA, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit held the 92nd annual football bust Monday evening (Dec. 3) at the Laurel Manor in Livonia, where the 2012 team awards were announced and the senior football student-athletes received their coveted 'M' rings. In addition to Team 133 being recognized, members from the 1972, '73 and '74 teams were honored.
Fifth-year senior safety Jordan Kovacs (Curtice, Ohio/Clay), who was one of six players to receive individual recognition at the program, was voted as the BO SCHEMBECHLER MOST VALUABLE PLAYER and received the ROBERT P. UFER BEQUEST award as the senior who demonstrated the most enthusiasm and love for Michigan.
Kovacs, a 2012 All-Big Ten second team choice by the league's coaches, started 12 games and totaled 65 tackles, 41 solo, five stops for losses, two sacks, one interception, two pass breakups and one forced fumble for a Wolverines defense that ranks second in the NCAA in pass defense (155.2 yards per game allowed), 11th in total defense (311.2 yards per game allowed) and 16th in scoring defense (18.8 points per game allowed).
For his career, the former walk-on has started 45 of 49 career games and has 331 tackles, 26 for losses, seven sacks, five interceptions, six forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered. Kovacs' 331 career tackles rank 12th in U-M history, while his six forced fumbles rank tied for third most.
Kovacs also received the Captain's Award with fellow Team 133 senior captain Denard Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach), who is the school's all-time leader in total yards (10,669) and touchdowns (91). He ranks third in career rushing yards (4,395) and touchdowns (42) and fourth in passing yards (6,250), passing touchdowns (49) and 100-yard rushing games (19).
Fifth-year senior offensive lineman Patrick Omameh (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) received the DR. ARTHUR D. ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD as the leading senior scholar on the team. Omameh, a four-year letterman who has started 41 consecutive games at right guard, is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference choice. Majoring in communication and sociology, he was voted by the league's coaches to the All-Big Ten first team this season.
Senior/junior offensive tackle Taylor Lewan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) received the HUGH H. RADER JR. MEMORIAL AWARD as the team's top offensive lineman. Lewan was named the Big Ten's Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year and voted to the All-Big Ten first team by the league's coaches and media. A three-year starter, Lewan has made 27 consecutive starts at left tackle. Lewan and Omameh are part of an offensive line that surrendered a league-best 15 sacks during the 2012 regular season and helped the Wolverines average 385 yards of offense per game.
The Wolverines' leading tackler, junior/sophomore Jake Ryan (Westlake Ohio/St. Ignatius), received the ROGER ZATKOFF AWARD as the team's top linebacker. Ryan, who earned All-Big Ten second team honors from the media, started 12 games and paced the defense with a career-best 84 tackles, 53 solo, 14.5 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, four forced fumbles and three pass breakups. Ryan's four forced fumbles tied a U-M single-season record.
Senior defensive end Craig Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) received the RICHARD KATCHER AWARD as U-M's top defensive lineman. Roh, who with his start at Ohio State on Nov. 24 tied Jon Jansen's school mark for most career starts with 50, was named to the All-Big Ten second team by the league's coaches in 2012. Roh has totaled 36 tackles, 5.5 stops for losses and four sacks this season. For his career, Roh has 148 tackles, 26.5 for losses, 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception and three pass breakups.
