BRADENTON, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team opened its spring season with a 3-2 win over Minnesota in the first round today (Friday, Feb. 8) before falling to first-seeded Illinois (4.5-0.5) in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Big Ten Match Play Championship at The Concession Golf Club. The Wolverines move to the consolation side of the bracket where they will face Northwestern tomorrow morning (Saturday, Feb. 9).

In the team's first-round matchup, senior Miguel Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) hit his final putt to earn a 1-up victory to send U-M through to the next round. The Wolverine captain, who led the entire way, birdied 17 to keep his lead.

Senior Matt Alessi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) and freshman Brett McIntosh (London, Ontario, Canada/Saunders Secondary School) earned 2-and-1 wins in the opening match. Alessi was tied heading into the back nine and converted consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to extend his lead before completing his win. McIntosh was also all tied up heading to the back nine before he pulled away.

Other first-round match scores included freshman Chris O'Neill (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run HS) falling 6-and-5 to Erik Van Rooven and sophomore Noori Hyun (Seoul, Korea (Centreville HS [Va.]) losing 3-and-1 to Tyler Lowenstein.

In the second match, Alessi halved after hitting pars on each of the final two holes. Alessi went 2-up after the first three, but Illinois' Charlie Danielson played bogey-free golf for the final 10 holes.

The other second-round matches included O'Neill falling 4-and-2 to Thomas Pieters, McIntosh dropping a 5-and-4 decision to Thomas Detry, Hyun losing 4-and-3 to Brian Campbell and freshman Andrew Yeager (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) falling 3-and-1 to Mason Jacobs.

The Big Ten Match Play Championship concludes Saturday (Feb. 9) with the championship and consolation brackets. Follow results live through the AJGA site.
