FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- Freshman Chris O'Neill (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run HS) continues to be listed among the top 10 individual positions (tie-ninth), while the University of Michigan men's golf team posted a 312 team total today (Saturday, April 27) and is 12th heading into the final round of the Big Ten Championships being played on the Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort.
After leading the Wolverines with rounds of 72 and 73 yesterday (Friday, April 26), O'Neill followed with a 76 and is tied for ninth with a 221 total. Opening on the back nine, he made the turn at two over after a birdie on No. 14 erased one of three bogeys. With eight pars and a No. 6 double bogey as his only blemish on the front side, he closed with a third-round tally of 76.
Fellow freshman Brett McIntosh (London, Ontario, Canada/Saunders Secondary School) used his own 76 to remain among the top 20 as he sits at 225 (74-75-76). A birdie on the 14th hole helped him remove one of his two back-side bogeys, as he made the turn one over. Posting three more bogeys on the front side, he tallied a 76, putting him in a tie for 20th.
Senior Matt Alessi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) used a second straight 79 to put him at 236 (78-79-79) and in a tie for 55th. U-M's other positions include sophomore Noori Hyun (Seoul, Korea/Centreville HS [Va.]) at 57th with a 240 (80-79-81) and senior Miguel Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) in a tie for 58th at 241 (77-80-84).
Illinois used a three-under 285 to maintain its lead with an 870 total (291-294-285). The Fighting Illinois are seven shots ahead of Minnesota, which is second at 877 (285-302-290), and Indiana (299-291-300) and Iowa (289-300-301), which are both third at 890. Illinois' Thomas Pieters used a third straight two-under 70 to stay atop the individual leaderboard at six-under 210.
The Wolverines will close the conference tournament Sunday (April 28) with the final round starting at 8 a.m. off the 10th tee. U-M will be paired with Wisconsin.
