Beginning the day off the back nine, Thompson birdied three of his first five holes. Opening with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes, Thompson bogeyed the par-3 12th hole to sit one under par after three. A third birdie on the par-3 14th and a fourth on the 18th hole helped him make the turn three under. On the front nine, Thompson posted eight pars and a bogey.

Overall, Thompson has posted 26 pars, six birdies and four bogeys during his 36 holes of play.

Using a U-M Golf Course men's collegiate record team tally of 12-under 272, USC took over the team lead with a seven-under 561 total, while the Oregon, Kent State and TCU are all tied for second at six-under 562. Virginia rounds out the top five at even-par 568.

Q U O T E S

U-M Senior Matt Thompson
On the second day of the NCAA Central Regional ... "After yesterday's round, Chris (Whitten) and I talked about what I needed to do. Today, I think I did exactly what we had discussed, but I had so many chances that just did not go in. I hit it better, putted better and got the most I could out of the round. I just missed a couple short ones and had a lot of 15 to 20 footers going over edges of the cup. So it would have been nice to get a few of those to go in, but with two under you can't be too disappointed."

On any changes in strategy for the final round ... "I don't think so. If I do the same things I did today, I could easily put a 64 or a 65 up on the board. I just have to go out and do it, make more putts and play my game."

• USC's 12-under 272 set the U-M Golf Course record for lowest men's collegiate round. The Trojans eclipsed the previous mark of 273 set by Minnesota tallied in the second round of the 1999 Wolverine Invitational (May 8-9).
