ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Chris O'Neill (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run HS) was named the Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week today (Wednesday, Feb. 19) after going 3-1 in match play to help the Wolverines claim their first-ever Big Ten Match Play Championship.
Opening up the spring season at the annual Big Ten Match Play event at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., O'Neill helped the No. 8 seed Wolverines win four straight matches to claim the title in a playoff over No. 7 seed Purdue.
Playing the entire event in U-M's No. 1 position, O'Neill posted a 3-1 record after defeating Michigan State's Mitch Rutledge (5-and-4) in the first round and earned a 5-and-4 victory over Iowa’s Ian Vandersee in the semifinal before claiming a 3-and-2 decision in the championship round versus Purdue’s Adam Schenk. Throughout the event, O'Neill won or halved 49 of the 62 holes he played.
The conference accolade is the third for O'Neill this season after he received the honor over back-to-back weeks early in the fall season -- Sept. 18 and Sept. 25.
Next up for O'Neill and the Wolverines is a trip to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Sunday through Tuesday (Feb. 23-25) for Purdue's Puerto Rico Classic held at the Rio Mar Resort's River Course.
