Next on the Tee
After three weeks of spring time preparation in a sunny and thawed out Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan men's golf team will head south, Friday through Sunday (March 26-28), for the 2010 FAU/Spring Break Championship. With 16 teams in the field, including 10 of the top 100 and seven Big Ten teams, the Maize and Blue will look to better its runner-up finish in the event last season in the three-day 54-hole competition played at the Gleneagles Country Club. Gleneagles will be set up for a par of 72 and 6,732 yards.

The Tournament Field
The FAU/Spring Break Championship will include 16 teams -- No. 68 Eastern Michigan, No. 81 Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, No. 10 Illinois, No. 42 Iowa, Marquette, No. 48 Michigan, No. 98 Minnesota, Murray State, Northern Illinois, No. 79 Notre Dame, No. 87 Ohio State, No. 82 Penn State, South Florida, No. 99 St. Mary's and Wisconsin.

The Tournament Lineup
The Wolverines will bring a five-man team down to the FAU/Spring Break Championship. Heading up the starters is sophomore Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview), junior Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) and freshman Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay). Rounding out the final two spots will be junior Alexander Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Fla.]) and freshman Rahul Bakshi (Chandigarh, India/St. John's).

Last Year at the FAU/Spring Break Championship
The Wolverines tallied a two-under 282 final-round team score to move up the leaderboard for the third straight day and finish as the runner-up at the FAU Spring Break Championship with an 861, 54-hole total. U-M, which posted its fifth top-three finish of the season, opened with a three-over 287 and followed with a 292 in the second round. Lion Kim led U-M for the third time this season, posting a one-under 212 tournament total (70-75-67), which placed him for fourth individually. In just his second start of his career, Matt Thompson tied for 10th with a 215 total (74-70-71).

Call Him Mr. Red Numbers
After starting the season with six straight rounds of 70 or better, Matt Thompson has continued to pace the Wolverines this season with his per-round scores. Overall, he has shot 11 of his 20 rounds at or below par, with a total of seven rounds under 70. He leads U-M with a 72.10 per-round average.

Yet, Another Near Miss
Matt Thompson's career-best eight-under 205 (69-69-67) performance at the 2009 Wolf Run Intercollegiate tied the second best 54-hole tournament total in U-M history. Thompson equaled Christian Vozza's 205 (67-69-69) performance that he tallied at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate. Overall, Bill Rankin holds the U-M record with an eight-under 202 (67-66-69) at the 2008 Maxwell.

Rookie Goes Deep, Way Deep
Jack Schultz's first-round, six-under 66 at the Bridgestone Intercollegiate was not only a career best for the freshman, but it marked the lowest round tallied by a Wolverine this season. Schultz has seven rounds of par or better in his first season and is averaging 73.10 per round.

Catching Fire
Lion Kim has posted half his events this season either under par or even. He posted a career-best nine-under 207 at the 2009 Wolverine at Radrick Farms and a seven-under 209 at the 2009 Bridgestone Intercollegiate while posting even-par 54-hole tallies at 2010 Puerto Rico Classic and the Western Refining All-America Classic, which he and teammate Alexander Sitompul received special invitations to play. For the season, Kim is averaging 216.14 per 54-hole event.

Mark Down Another
Lion Kim's four-under 67 in the second round of the 2010 Fresno State Lexus Classic tied his career-best round and marked the third time this season he has fired the personal-record round. He has now tallied the career-best round four times in his career. He set the mark last season with a four-under 67 in the final round of the 2009 FAU/Spring Break Championship. Kim now has 10 rounds under par this season, equaling his career high set last season.

Lowing Totals Even More in First Season
Rahul Bakski's second-round, one-under 70 at the 2010 Fresno State Lexus Classic was a new career best for the freshman. He topped the even-par 71 he shot in the third round of the 2009 Wolf Run Intercollegiate -- his first collegiate event. In his first season, he has started all seven events and is averaging 75.25 per round.

Atop the Leaderboard
For the second time this season, Michigan had three individuals finish among the top 10 in an event. At the Bridgestone Intercollegiate, Lion Kim tied for sixth, while Jack Schultz and Matt Thompson each shared the 10th position. The same trio also finished among the top 10 at the Wolverines at Radrick Farms with Thompson and Kim sharing the runner-up spot and Schultz tying for seventh. The Maize and Blue trio closed as the top three Wolverines in all but one fall event.

Wolverines Take Home Event Title
Michigan's team win at the 2009 Wolverine at Radrick Farms gives the Maize and Blue its 39th team win in the history of the program. It also marked the third consecutive season the Wolverines have won at least one team tournament title. In addition to this weekend's title, U-M won two team titles during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.

A Little Home Cooking Never Hurts
With the team title at the 2009 Wolverine at Radrick Farms, U-M head coach Andrew Sapp garnered his sixth trophy with the Wolverines and the 32nd of his coaching career. Of the half dozen wins for Sapp, four have come while hosting an event. Sapp's other five titles include: 2008 Wolverine Intercollegiate, 2008 Wolf Run Intercollegiate, 2007 Wolverine at Mission Inn, 2007 Purdue Midwest Shootout and 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate.

The Near Miss
Michigan's 24-under 840 tally at the Wolverine at Radrick Farms just missed the U-M 54-hole record by a single stroke. The Wolverines closed as the only team to post all three rounds under par -- 11-under 277, 10-under 278 and three-under 285. The Maize and Blue 54-hole record is 839 (277-275-287), which was totaled at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate. U-M's 839 was played on a par-71 course and equals a 13-under performance, so U-M's 24-under performance at Radrick Farms sets a new U-M record for under-par team tournament score.

Can They Make It Three Straight?
Last season, U-M had two team titles, eight top-five finishes in 14 events and shattered the team scoring record by two strokes, closing with a 292.05 per-round. Those numbers helped the Wolverines earn their second straight NCAA regional bid. Finishing fifth in the NCAA Southwest Regional, U-M advanced to the NCAA Finals for the first time in 12 years. U-M's postseason momentum continued at the championship event as the Wolverines moved on to the NCAA Match Play Finals, where they closed third, one hole away from competing for a national title. In his coaching career, U-M coach Andrew Sapp has 11 trips to the NCAA Finals taking three different schools to the championship event.
