ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomores Brett McIntosh (London, Ontario/Saunders SS) and Chris O'Neill (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run HS) of the University of Michigan men's golf team were awarded with Ping Division I All-Midwest Region honors today (Thursday, May 22) by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

O'Neill and McIntosh become the first pair of U-M teammates to earn All-Midwest distinction since former Wolverines Matt Thompson, Joey Garber and Lion Kim were each named to the team in 2011. Overall, they are the 10th and 11th U-M golfers to be given the honors since 2008, and their recognition gives head coach Chris Whitten three All-Midwest golfers in as many years at the helm of the U-M program.

O'Neill, a second team All-Big-Ten Conference selection, led U-M with a 73.03 scoring average -- the 10th-best in program history -- this season. He also paced the Wolverines in several other categories, including rounds under par (12) and winning percentage (73.3), and earned a trio of top-five finishes that led to an individual invitation to compete at the Sugar Grove, Ill., NCAA Regional, where he tied for 20th.

McIntosh was not far behind O'Neill in scoring, averaging 73.74 strokes per 18 holes. The two led U-M in eight of 10 regular-season events, accumulating five of the team's seven top-five finishes. They also combined for a 5-2-1 record to lead the Wolverines to their first Big Ten Match Play championship, winning in a playoff hole to capture the title.

Both O'Neill and McIntosh picked up their first medalist honors during their sophomore seasons, with O'Neill's win coming in the fall at the Windon Memorial (Sept. 22-23) after shooting all three rounds under par. McIntosh earned his victory during the spring half of the campaign, firing a six-under 65 -- the low single-round score by any Wolverine this season -- in the final round at the NYX Hoosier Invitational (April 12-13) to seal the victory.

A total of 157 players were honored across six regions: Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West.
