Wolverine Summer Updates: U.S. Amateur Tournament

Aug. 13, 2014 -- Three Wolverines represented U-M at the prestigious U.S. Amateur Tournament in Georgia last week, played at the Atlanta Athletic Club Highlands and Riverside Courses. Tom Swanson, Reed Hrynewich and former player Andrew Chapman earned qualification into the event through qualifiers earlier in the summer. Swanson finished with a 73-76/149 total, while Hrynewich scored similarly, carding 77-73/150, and Chapman's 75-80/155 rounded out the group. The 36-hole cut came in at +2 (or a 145 total), leaving Swanson and Hrynewich just a few strokes shy of advancing into the later rounds. [ U.S. Amateur Event Home | Scoring ]

Aug. 1, 2014 -- At the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, Bryce Evon enjoyed another week of consistent play, piecing together rounds of 70-73-72-72 to arrive at his 287 total. Evon's one-under total earned him a tie for 12th place at the event, which was played at Legends on the Niagara Battlefield Course in Niagara Falls, Ontario. July 30, 2014 -- Chris O'Neill represented U-M at the prestigious Western Amateur Championship this week, played at Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Ill. O'Neill carded a pair of one-over 72s in the first two rounds of the tournament, leaving him with a 144 total after 36 holes, just two strokes shy of the cut line. July 26, 2014 -- Tom Swanson continued what has been a strong summer of play for the soon-to-be sophomore by finishing in a tie for second place at the Montana Men's State Am. Swanson's day-two 68 and final-round 71 brought him to a four-under 212 total in the event played at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club (North Course) in Whitefish, Mont. [ Final Scoring ]

July 25, 2014 -- A trio of U-M golfers repped the block M at the Northern Amateur played last week at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Ind. Incoming freshman Kyle Mueller led all Wolverines by finishing in third place after he closed the event with back-to-back 70s to finish with a four-under 212 total. July 21, 2014 -- Another Wolverine qualified for the U.S. Amateur this week, as Tom Swanson joined classmate Reed Hrynewich by clinching a spot from the Missoula, Mont., qualifier. Swanson won the event, which offered two qualifying positions, with a first-round 66 and a second-round 69, finishing with a 135 total. July 11, 2014 -- Bryce Evon finished seventh at the Ontario Men's Amateur Championship, played The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ont., this week. Evon totaled 11 birdies during the event and finished the tournament with by going three-under across his final 15 holes. He shot a 70 on day one and followed it up with a 71 on day two before closing out the tournament with back-to-back 70's in rounds three and four to finish with a three-under 281 total.[ Ontario Men's Amateur Championship ]

July 10, 2014 -- Noori Hyun competed in a U.S. Amateur Qualifier this week at Cedar Chase course in Grand Rapids, Mich., but was unable to earn one of the qualifying spots made available. July 9, 2014 -- Tom Swanson had a successful stretch at the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., this week, but fell in the Match Play part of the tournament during the Round of 32. Swanson advanced from the field as the fifth overall seed after 36 holes of stroke play, and won his first matchup 5-and-4 before advancing to the second round. July 8, 2014 -- Kyle Mueller finished his U.S. Amateur Qualifier among a four-man group tied for 10th place. Mueller fired a first-round, four-under 6,7 before a day-two 72 to finish with a 139 total, good for three under par. With the leader at 12 under, Mueller was unable to claim a qualifying spot in the event, but his 11 birdies highlighted a solid pair of rounds at the Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, S.C. July 7, 2014 -- Despite a low total, Chris O'Neill was unable to qualify for the U.S. Amateur today, playing in his home state of Virginia at The Federal Club. With only three qualifying spots available, the leaderboard was tight near the top. O'Neill finished tied for fifth, just three shots behind the group's third qualifier with a one-over total of 146. July 3, 2014 -- Chris O'Neill put on a strong performance at the legendary Pinehurst Resort, playing Pinehurst No. 8 for the 114th Men's North and South Championship, the longest consecutive-running amateur golf championship in the U.S. Among a field of 132, O'Neill survived the first cut, which trimmed the field to 60 players, with a four-over 145, placing him top 20 as the final round of stroke play began. Despite closing his third round with back-to-back birdies, O'Neill was not among the field's top 16 players, who advance to the match-play round on July 4-5. June 28, 2014 -- Incoming freshman Kyle Mueller put on a strong performance at the Dogwood Invitational this week at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. Mueller first had to qualify for the event on Monday, June 23, and did so in dramatic fashion. In a second playoff hole, Mueller sank a 50-foot putt to cap off a two-under 70 and qualify for the tournament in the final slot. Once tournament play began on Wednesday, Mueller continued his scoring touch early. At four under through 36 holes, Mueller hoped to play through the weekend, but a third-round 74 left him with a 214 total, just a few strokes shy of the cut, and his weekend was ended on Friday. June 21, 2014 -- At the 2014 Rice Planter's Amateur last week, Tom Swanson was a part of a three-man group that finished in a tie for fifth place. Swanson finished the event at seven under par, aided by back-to-back four-under rounds over the final 36 holes of the tournament. June 21, 2014 -- Chris O'Neill, who posted a 292 total for the weekend, finished in 56th place last week at the 53rd Northeast Amateur Golf Invitational played at the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I. June 18, 2014 -- Two current Wolverines and a U-M alum had great showings at the 103rd Michigan Am, played at the Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix, Mich. Former Michigan golfer Andrew Chapman earned stroke-play medalist honors in the competition, aided by his record-setting 63 on day two. Chapman earned the first seed in the match-play bracket among the trimmed field of 64. Chapman won his first matchup 5-and-3 but fell in the round of 32. On the other side of the bracket, Reed Hrynewich earned the 14th overall seed and won his first round of match play, 7-and-6, before falling, 3-and-2, in the round of 32. Andrew Yeager posted a 63 on day two of stroke play -- the second-lowest score of the tournament -- but was defeated in the opening round of match play.[ Michigan Am ]

June 12, 2014 -- At the Michigan Open Championship presented by LaFontaine Cadillac, five former U-M golfers joined current Wolverine Reed Hrynewich in the 156-man field. Joey Garber (2nd place), Matt Thompson (tie-20th) and Scott Hayes (tie-26th) each finished among the field's top 30, while Randy Erskine and assistant coach Nick Pumford missed the cut after two-day totals of 150 and 151, respectively. Hrynewich used a three-under 69 in his second round to finish with a 289 total, tying him for 35th place overall and tied for 14th among amateur competitors. [ Michigan Open Championship ]

June 5, 2014 -- Later in the week, Tom Swanson headed to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the 99th Southwestern Amateur, played at the Cochise Course at the Desert Mountain Club. June 2, 2014 -- Tom Swanson, a returning sophomore, continued a busy stretch with U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio. May 26, 2014 -- Tom Swanson was the medalist at Missoula Country Club's Barnett Memorial Day tournament last weekend, finishing with a 201 total -- the lowest winning score for the tournament in 20 years. Swanson's 67 on Saturday, 66 on Sunday and 68 on Monday represented the low round for each day of the event, adding up to a 10-stroke cushion by tournament's end. May 13, 2014 -- Assistant coach Nick Pumford and returning junior Brett McIntosh both competed in the U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Radrick Farms on Tuesday. Pumford finished in a three-man tie for ninth place, just two shots off the qualifiers. He corrected a front-nine 40 with a two-under 34 after the turn to finish with a 74 total, while McIntosh fired a 77 to tie for 17th place in the event. [ U.S. Open Local Qualifier ]

May 12, 2014 -- Returning sophomore Reed Hrynewich shot a 77 at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Muskegon Country Club. In the single-round event, Hrynewich found himself at even par on the turn and finished the round in a tie for 31st among a crowded leaderboard. [ U.S. Open Local Qualifier ]
