ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golf head coach Chris Whitten announced today (Tuesday, Sept. 4) that senior Miguel Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) was named team captain for the upcoming 2012-13 season.
"Miguel represents everything we look for in a leader of our program," said Whitten. "He cares passionately about this university, this team and all of this teammates. He brings valuable experiences, a strong work ethic and complements what we are trying to do as coaches. He received strong support from his teammates and we are happy to name him captain."
"It is a great honor to be selected captain by my teammates and coaches," said Echavarria. "It shows they trust me in my abilities to lead the team. I intend to work hard and be accessible for my teammates at all times in order to help the team improve every day."
An engineering major, Echavarria was honored as the 11th Wolverine to earn the prestigious GCAA Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholar honor last season. He was also an Academic All-Big selection, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and U-M Athletic Academic Achievement recipient.
In his junior season, he started 11 events, posting a career-best scoring average of 75.21 and setting career bests for single-round (68), 36-hole tournament (148), 54-hole tournament (214) and 72-hole tournament (309) scores. He went 2-0 at the Big Ten Match Play Championship and competed in his first conference championship, tying for 33rd. For his career, he has started 15 of 20 events while holding a 76.08 per-round average.
Echavarria and the rest of the Wolverines begin the season Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18, heading to Toledo, Ohio, for the 2012 Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Club -- the course where U-M made its 2009 NCAA Semifinal run.
