Wolverines Sign Pair of Recruits for 2008-09 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coach Andrew Sapp of the University of Michigan men's golf team announced Wednesday (Nov. 21) that Alex Frankel(Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Matt Thompson(Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) have signed National Letters of Intent for the 2008-09 academic year.

"Alex and Matt are great fits for what we are building at the University of Michigan," Sapp said. "They will complement our returning players very well and should have wonderful careers as Wolverines."

A Georgia State Division 2A Medalist in 2007, Frankel will join the Wolverine program following a stellar senior campaign at the Lovett School. The Atlanta, Ga., native earned a trio of top five finishes this year, claiming third at the Future Masters Tournament, fifth at the AJGA Jerry Pate/Andrews Institute and another fifth at the AJGA Ringold Telephone Junior Classic en route to becoming the fourth-ranked player in the state according to Golfweek. Currently ranked No. 52 in the country in the Polo Golf rankings, Frankel also earned AJGA HP Scholastic Junior All-America status last year.

"Alex brings a wealth of experience to our team," said Sapp. "He had a tremendous summer of competition playing all over the country. Alex is an extremely hard worker who has gotten better every year. He is the fourth-ranked player in the state of Georgia which is one of the best golf states. We are proud to be able to lure him out of the south to Michigan and the Big Ten where we think he will thrive both academically and athletically."

Rounding out the freshman class, Thompson is a medalist at the Michigan Junior Amateur Championship as well as the top-rated player in the state of Michigan according to Golfweek's rankings. After he took home runner-up honors at the 2006 AJGA Buick Junior Open, Thompson walked away with the title at the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands. Thompson followed that with medalist accolades at the Michigan High School Division 2 State Championship, earning himself a place on the 2006 MIGCA Super Team. Thompson's senior season was equally stellar with a third place finish at the 2007 AJGA Cleveland Junior Championship to complement two other top-10 finishes. Also positioned among the country's elite, Thompson is ranked 41st in the country by Polo Golf Rankings.

"We have had our eye on Matt since his freshman year," Sapp noted, "and his signing with Michigan is a long time coming. He has been the best player in Michigan for the past two years, and we are thrilled that he is staying home to compete for the Wolverines. Matt is a powerful player who hits it long, and he also has great touch on the greens. He is a proven winner and will add a lot to our golf program."

The Wolverines will lose only two seniors this season, co-captains Brian Ottenweller(Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Tim Schaetzel(Atlanta, Ga.).
