LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomores Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) and Stacey Ervin (Taylor, Mich./Truman) of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team were in action during day one of the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge on Thursday (Feb. 7) at the Las Vegas Sports Center. De los Angeles paced the all-around competition with an 85.80, while Ervin took seventh in the all-around; both advance to day two of competition on Saturday night (Feb. 9, 7:15 p.m. PST).
2012 United States Olympian Sam Mikulak (Corona del mar, Calif./Corona del mar) did not compete due to injury.
De los Angeles started the night scoring 14.50 on pommel horse, which placed him in second; he also earned 14.25 on still rings (fourth place) and 13.90 on vault (37th). On the parallel bars, de los Angeles performed a tucked Belle before dismounting with a double pike to score 13.850. In the fifth rotation, he scored 13.85 on the horizontal bar, executing laidout and straddled Tkatchevs. Finishing the competition on the floor exercise with a triple twist dismount, he posted his highest score of the evening, a second-place 15.45, to move into the all-around lead.
Ervin earned his day-two berth after tying with de los Angeles for second on floor (15.45), and he posted a pair of top-10 finishes by tying for eighth on vault (14.90) and ninth on parallel bars (14.20). He also added a 27th-place 13.05 on pommel horse to close out his night.
Former Wolverine and current administrative assistant Ian Makowske (2008-11), representing Team Mikey's Way, took part in three events, highlighted by a 17th-place 14.30, as well as a 30th-place finish on high bar (12.95) and a 11.55 on pommel horse, which tied for 51st.
Competition concludes with the Winter Cup Challenge finals on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. PST; the top 42 athletes, according to the men's program points system, including de los Angeles and Ervin, will compete.
