Feb. 10, 2013
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomore Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team, the leader after night one of the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge, began his ascent to the U.S. Men's National Team on Saturday night (Feb. 9) at the Las Vegas Sports Center.
The sophomore started on the still rings, where he dismounted with a full-twisting double layout to score 14.350. On the vault, his Kasamatsu one-and-a-half earned him a 14.700. He posted scores of 15.100 on parallel bars; 13.500 on high bar; 15.650 on floor; and 13.300 on pommel horse to secure the second-place finish in between Jake Dalton and Dannel Leyva, both of whom hold spots on the 2012 United States Olympic Team.
"I feel pretty satisfied with the way I performed. I definitely had some ups and downs throughout competition, but it really wasn't too bad," said de los Angeles of making the squad. "I didn't really have many expectations coming into the meet, and I didn't really feel much pressure, so I think that played a big part in the success I had."
"Adrian had a great few days here in Las Vegas," said Michigan head coach Kurt Golder. "He really asserted himself as one of the top gymnasts in the country, finishing in the top three and ahead of an Olympian."
Additionally, classmate Stacey Ervin (Taylor, Mich./Truman) competed on day two, taking third overall on floor in combined scoring (29.90) and fourth on vault (29.90), and he was the No. 10 finisher on parallel bars (28.20).
In the two-day scoring, de los Angeles was second on floor (31.10), ninth on pommel horse (27.80), third on still rings (28.60), sixth on parallel bars (28.95), and tied for eighth on high bar (27.35).
Following the competition, de los Angeles, along with several others, were named to the U.S. national team, along with all eight members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.
The full U-M squad returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 16) against the Ohio State Buckeyes at 2:30 p.m. from St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will be carried live via the Big Ten Network.
