STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team fell to the No. 1 Penn State Nittany Lions, 437.300-430.400, on Saturday (March 16) at Rec Hall, site of the 2013 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships. U-M won two individual events on the night on vault and parallel bars, while sophomore Stacey Ervin (Troy, Mich./Truman) won the lone individual event title with a 15.30 on floor.
In the first rotation, the Wolverines were led by a 14.50 by junior Matt Freeman (Canton, Mich./ Plymouth) on pommels, good enough for third as U-M netted a 67.65 on the event as a team, as Penn State tallied a 71.30.
U-M notched a 73.05 on still rings in the second rotation, as Freeman led the way once again with a 15.25, which was good for second place. Junior Jordan Gaarenstroom (Laguna Hills, Calif./ Halstrom) took fourth on the event with a 14.75.
U-M's first event win of the night came on vault, as all five Wolverines surpassed the 14.50 barriers, as junior Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar) and Ervin both blazed the U-M trail with 15.20s on the event to tie for third.
U-M trailed, 293.80-289.20, heading into the fourth rotation, where the top score on the night came from Ervin, as the sophomore scored an event-winning 15.30 on the exercise. Sophomore Hub Humphrey (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) aided the effort with a career-best 14.85, while senior Rohan Sebastian (Oklahoma City, Okla./ Bishop McGuinness Catholic) was second on the team with a 15.20.
Heading into the fifth rotation on high bar, U-M marked a 69.90. The effort was highlighted by a second-place 14.90 by Mikulak and a fifth-place finish from senior Syque Caesar (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy), who collected a 14.30.
In the final rotation on parallel bars, the Maize & Blue brought home their second event win of the night with a 71.30, paced by a 14.85 from sophomore Michael Strathern (Bartlett, Ill./ Bartlett), good for third place. Ervin scored a career high and had the second-best score for U-M on the event with a 14.80 to take fourth.
For the second straight week, U-M competed without Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./ Millikan), who took part in the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. De los Angeles took fifth in the all-around with an 80.650, highlighted by a runner-up 14.80 on parallel bars.
Michigan returns to action Saturday (March 23), when the squad hosts UIC as well as SUNY-Brockport in a tri-meet from Cliff Keen Arena. The meet is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will honor U-M's trio of seniors in Douglass Johnson Jr., Rohan Sebastian and Syque Caesar.
