ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics squad began its 2012-13 season with its annual Maize & Blue intrasquad meet, with Maize defeating Blue, 330.20-328.80, on Friday (Dec. 7) at Cliff Keen Arena. Overall, the Maize team claimed a victory on parallel bars (56.50) and high bar (56.50), while Blue countered with wins on floor (57.45), pommel horse (52.50), vault (56.80) and rings (57.65).

Sophomore Stacey Ervin (Troy, Mich./Truman) began the night in midseason form with a 15.75 on floor to win the event for the Blue squad, while classmate Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) took second on the event for the Maize squad with a 14.80.

On pommels, junior Dylan James (Valencia, Calif./William S. Hart) scored a 13.70 to win the event for the Blue squad, while classmate Alex Bubnov (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) notched a 13.60 for second.

The Blue squad swept the top three spots on rings in the third rotation, as senior Rohan Sebastian (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) tallied a 15.25, while junior Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar), working his way back from a calf injury, scored a 14.10 with a partial dismount. Fellow junior Matt Freeman (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) matched Mikuklak's score to round out the placewinners for the Blue squad.

Ervin collected his second event win of the night on vault with a 14.85 with his signature front handspring, double front, while sophomore Taylor Harrower (Dublin, Ohio /Dublin Coffman) placed second with a 14.75. De los Angeles was the lone Maize representative in the top three, scoring a 14.40.

The Maize team, trailing by almost six points, rallied in the fifth and sixth rotations, starting with redshirt senior Syque Caesar (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) scoring a 15.30 on parallel bars, followed by a 14.50 from de los Angeles. The deficit was closed for good on the final rotation, as the Maize squad swept the top five spots, led by sophomore Michael Strathern (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) (14.60), to win the meet in comeback fashion.

"What I was pleased with the most tonight was our fifth and sixth rotations on parallel bars and high bar, because that is when you're the most fatigued, and it's where we're going to start off at Big Tens later in the season, and at the Windy City Invite," said head coach Kurt Golder. "If we can be strong when we are tired, then we should be able to do it when we're fresh. As far as performances of the night, I would say that Stacey's (Ervin) floor routine was superb, and as far as a freshman routine, I would say Nolan Novak on pommel horse."

The Wolverines kick off the 2013 season at the annual Windy City Invite, hosted by UIC on Saturday, Jan. 19, in Chicago, Ill. Meet time is slated for 7:30 p.m. CST.
