ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will send a trio of current student-athletes and one former Wolverine to the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge at the LV Sports Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The USA Gymnastics sanctioned event will commence Thursday (Feb. 7) at 6:30 p.m. PST, with finals on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 7:15 p.m. PST.

Making the trek to the competition will be junior Sam Mikulak (Corona del mar, Calif./Corona del mar), a 2012 Team USA Olympian, well as sophomores Stacey Ervin (Taylor, Mich./Truman) and Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan). Additionally, former U-M gymnast and current program assistant Ian Makowske will be featured in competition.

Mikulak, who currently ranks No. 2 in the country on parallel bars, will compete on pommels, rings, parallel bars and high bar. Ervin, currently No. 3 on vault and floor, will compete on floor, vault, high bar, pommel horse and parallel bars, while de los Angeles will partake in the all-around competition, where he currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA rankings.

Makowske, a two-time NCAA runner-up on high bar, will take part on high bar, floor and pommel horse while representing Team Mikey's Way, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children with cancer cope with the fear and boredom of treatment. All four are grouped together and will begin on pommel horse in the first rotation.

The top 42 gymnasts, according to the men's program committee's points ranking system, will advance to the final competition, along with the top three gymnasts on each apparatus. The all-around and individual-event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score.

Performances at the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge will help determine the 15 men who will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2013 U.S. Gymnastics Championships Aug. 15-18 in Hartford, Conn. The eight members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic squad retain their spots on the national team. The remaining seven spots will be determined based on the following criteria: the top two ranked all-around athletes who are not already on the senior national team; two based on the National Team Points System; two athletes selected by the Men's Program Committee; and one selected by the national team coordinator

The full U-M squad returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 16) against the Ohio State Buckeyes at 2:30 p.m. from St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will be carried live via the Big Ten Network.
