ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior men's gymnast Sam Mikulak (Corona del mar, Calif./Corona del mar), fresh off a record-setting night at the Big Ten Team and All-Around Finals on Friday (March 28), has been named the College Gymnastics Association National Gymnast of the Week for the second straight week, the association announced today (Thursday, April 3).
The U.S. All-Around champion scored the highest NCAA all-around score ever (93.70) to earn the third Big Ten All-Around title of his career, while he also set the NCAA record on parallel bars (16.15). Additionally, he was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year for the third time in his career, becoming only the third conference gymnast to ever accomplish the feat.
Overall, it is the sixth honor of his career and second award of the season.
Mikulak and the rest of the Wolverines will now look to defend their 2013 NCAA championship on home soil, as the Wolverines will play host to the 2014 NCAA Championships from April 10-12 at Crisler Center. Team qualification commences on Thursday (April 10), as U-M will be competing in the night session at 7 p.m. This will be the third time U-M has hosted a men's gymnastics national championships. Michigan also hosted the event in 1951 and 1971, with the latter held at Crisler.
