ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- University of Michigan sophomore men's gymnast Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar) placed third in all-around competition at the 2012 Visa Championships Friday and Saturday (June 8-9), earning a spot on the USA Gymnastics Senior National team and a berth at the 2012 Olympic Trials.
Mikulak's 182.850 all-around total included top-five scores on parallel bars (second, 31.20), vault (fourth, 32.30), pommel horse (fifth, 29.30) and high bar (fifth, 30.85). His signature performance came on parallel bars, where the 2011 NCAA all-around champion finished behind all-around runner-up Danell Leyva (31.80) and one spot ahead of all-around champion John Orozco (30.85), who tied for third. In addition, Mikulak tied for 10th on still rings (29.15) and took 13th on floor exercise (30.05).
Mikulak is one of 15 men who will vie for spots on the five-member U.S. Olympic team at the Olympic Trials, scheduled for Thursday and Saturday, June 28-30, in San Jose, Calif. Mikulak is the first Wolverine to qualify for the trials since alumnus Justin Toman (1998-2002) in 2000.
Freshman Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) was also in action at the Visa Championships and placed 17th in the all-around (171.650). His top event finish came on pommel horse, where he scored a 27.90 to place ninth.
