SAN JOSE, Calif. -- University of Michigan sophomore men's gymnast Sam Mikulak (Corona del mar, Calif./Corona del Mar) topped all competition with an all-around score of 91.80 on Thursday (June 28) on day one of the 2012 United States Olympic Trials inside the HP Pavilion.
With scores carrying over from the Visa Championships, the U-M gymnast now sits in third overall in the all-around competition heading into day two of competition on Saturday (June 30).
Mikulak's day began on the parallel bars, where his dynamic routine, which included a unique front one-and-a-quarter to swing through, earned him a 15.700, which was good for second on the apparatus. He was equally dynamic on the high bar, with three big release moves, earning a 15.550 and securing a fifth-place finish on the event.
On floor, Mikulak mounted with a tucked double-twisting, double back and posted a 15.500 on the floor to take seventh before moving to the pommel horse, where he added a fourth-place 14.600 to his all-around total.
On the still rings, Mikulak swung smoothly through tucked and piked Yamawakis to score 14.550, and followed up on vault with a Kasamatsu double -- good for a 15.900 and second place to complete his first day of competition.
"I just wanted to keep calm and hit all my sets," Mikulak said after the competition. "I was pretty nervous coming into this -- my first Olympic Trials -- and I felt like I came out pretty well."
Day two of action commences Saturday at 4 p.m. on NBC as Mikulak seeks to become the first American Olympic gymnast in Michigan men's gymnastics history.
Automatic spots on Team USA go to the top two all-around finishers, provided they also rank among the top three in at least three of the six disciplines. The other three spots on the squad will be determined by USA Gymnastics at the conclusion of the meet.
