Olympic Trials Central | Michigan at the Olympics

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- University of Michigan sophomore men's gymnast Sam Mikulak (Corona del mar, Calif./Corona del mar) battled through a sprained ankle on day two of the 2012 United States Olympic Trials Saturday (June 30), scoring a 14.40 on pommel horse in his lone event of the day at HP Pavilion.

Mikulak, who suffered an ankle injury on day one of competition on vault, was scratched from the all-around competition after scoring a day-one all-around high of 91.80 and sat in third place heading into the final day of competition.

Sitting in 15th place in the all-around following the Visa Championships and Olympic Trials, Mikulak will petition the USA Gymnastics Committee for one of three remaining spots on Team USA, as fellow competitors Danell Leyva and John Orozco have already locked in trips to London for their all-around performances. USA Gymnastics will use the average score from the first three rounds of qualifying to determine Mikulak's marks for the events he did not compete in Saturday.

Team USA will be announced Sunday (July 1) at 9 p.m.
