ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Sam Mikulak (Del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar), as well juniors Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) and Stacey Ervin (Taylor, Mich./Truman) will take part in the 2013 P&G Gymnastics Championships, scheduled for Aug. 15-18 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
The event, which serves as U.S. Gymnastics' national championships, will feature male competition on Friday (Aug. 16) at 7 p.m. and Sunday (Aug. 18) at 6:30 p.m. All three Wolverines will participate in full all-around competition at the event.
Mikulak, a 2012 U.S. Olympian and current Team USA member, enters the meet as U-M's most decorated competitor after taking second on parallel bars, third in the all-around, fourth on vault, and fifth on high bar and pommel horse in the 2012 championships held in St. Louis, Mo. The last time Mikulak competed in Hartford was in 2010, where he won the all-around junior competition just month prior to enrolling at U-M.
In his latest competition, Mikulak won the high bar competition at the World Challenge Cup on June 23 in Anadia, Portugal. Additionally, he took third on floor exercise to earn his first international medals of his career.
Also a member of Team USA, de los Angeles will be taking part in the senior competition for the second time in his career after taking 17th in the all-around competition in 2012. His all-around score of 171.650 was highlighted by a ninth-place 27.900 finish on pommel horse. As a junior gymnast in 2011, he took first in the all-around, second on parallel bars, as well as fourth on still rings and fifth on pommel horse. He is coming off a second-place all-around performance at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., where he achieved national team status for the second straight year.
Ervin earned a berth despite suffering a knee injury at the U.S. Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo., on July 11. Regarding as one of the nation's top tumblers, he successfully petitioned USA Gymnastics for a berth in the competition which will serve as his first senior national competition.
The U.S. Gymnastics Championships, previously known as the Visa Championships, determine U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels.
The event will air preliminary competition on Thursday (Aug. 16) at 8 p.m. on NBC Sports Network, while the finals will be aired on NBC on Sunday (Aug. 18) at 1 p.m.
U-M will host the 2014 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships from April 10-12 inside Crisler Center as the squad seeks to defend its 2013 NCAA and Big Ten titles. U-M will play host to NCAAs for the first time since 1971.
