ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will enter the 2013 campaign ranked No. 2 in the GymInfo preseason national poll, which was released Sunday (Oct. 7). The Maize and Blue, which looks to improve upon a sixth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships, received two first-place votes.
Big Ten Conference foe Illinois sits atop the poll, garnering six first-place votes. Checking in at No. 3 is Oklahoma with two first-place votes, followed by Penn State at No. 4 with three first-place votes. Stanford rounds out the top five with two first-place votes. Depth in the Big Ten will again be a factor as seven squads debut in the top-10. Conference members Minnesota, Ohio State, Nebraska and Iowa rank Nos. 7-10.
For the 2013 season the Wolverines return a plethora of talent, including 2012 United States Olympian and defending NCAA high bar champion Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar), who also tied for runner-up in the all-around competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Two All-Americans from last season return, including Mikulak (all-around, high bar, parallel bars) and sophomore Stacey Ervin (Taylor, Mich./Truman) on the floor exercise and vault. The Wolverines will also welcome back fifth-year senior Syque Caesar (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./ Lincoln Park Academy), who competed for Bangladesh in the 2012 Olympics, as well as sophomore Adrian de los Angeles (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan), who was a member of the 2012 All-Big Ten first team.
The Wolverines will host No. 5 Stanford in their first home meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 26, and then welcome No. 8 California on Saturday, Feb. 2. A meet against No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday, March 9, will cap off the home season against top-10 ranked opponents. All three events will be held in Cliff Keen Arena.
