Update (1/4/2012): Due to a wrist injury suffered in training over winter break, Mikulak has withdrawn from the Olympic test event and will not compete in England.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Michigan men's gymnastics sophomore Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar), the 2011 NCAA all-around champion, is one of two gymnasts selected to represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Test Event, to be held Jan. 10-13 at North Greenwich Arena in London, England.
"It's an honor to be selected to represent Team USA for this Olympic Test Event," said Mikulak. "My training has intensified greatly in order to prove myself out on the floor and make my country proud. It will be a amazing experience, and I can't wait to compete on the international stage."
Mikulak, along with former Oklahoma Sooner standout Chris Brooks, will take part in the event, which serves as a second qualifying event to the 2012 Olympic Games, as Team USA has already qualified several individual athletes in men's gymnastics.
Mikulak will participate in Mixed Group 6 in Subdivision 3 in the preliminary round, and will begin on vault. His sub division is slated to compete at 8:40 p.m. ET on Jan. 10. The top eight men on each apparatus in the prelims will advance to the event finals.
The event, part of the 'London Prepares Series,' is being held to test aspects of competition, as well as the workforce, condition and performance of equipment. Additionally, the results and scoring aspects of competition will be put under the microscope.
