Wolverines Preseason Favorite for Big Ten Title

Dec. 15, 2010

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The defending NCAA champion University of Michigan men's gymnastics team is tops in the Big Ten preseason coaches' poll, released Wednesday (Dec. 15). Illinois, which beat out Michigan last season for the Big Ten title, was voted second, while Ohio State is third.

Conference coaches also picked two athletes from each team to be named to the Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch List. Michigan's selections were juniors Syque Caesar (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) and Devan Cote (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline).

The Wolverines return the 2010 Big Ten and NCAA all-around champion, senior Chris Cameron (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region), and a pair of 2010 All-Americans, seniors Thomas Kelley (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Ian Makowske (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow). Leading the 11 member freshman class, Michigan will also employ the help of Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Carona del Mar), national champion at the 2010 USA Gymnastics Championships.

Michigan matches up against four other Big Ten teams, including Ohio State, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota, in the first regular-season competition at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 15, in Chicago, Ill.
