ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team dropped a 5-1 contest to Bowling Green on Tuesday night (Jan. 8) at Yost Ice Arena. The Falcons, which led 32-20 in shots in the game, carried a two-goal lead into the second period, before U-M cut it to one. However, two BGSU markers later in the middle frame and one in the third period led to the four-goal final.
BSGU jumped on top quickly, 2-0, scoring even-strength at 6:10 and 7:50. U-M then received a five-minute power play after a major boarding call on Bowling Green, but the Wolverines failed to capitalize and skated into the first intermission down two.
U-M cut its deficit to one 3:03 into the second period, as junior Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.) fed junior Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) for a redirection marker from the slot. However, the Falcons regained the two-goal cushion at 11:46, when Ryan Carpenter poked home a loose puck in the crease.
The Falcons added to their lead minutes later, at 14:27, when a wrister by Adam Berkle from the point found daylight, stretching the U-M deficit to 4-1, where the score stayed at the end of two periods.
Bowling Green added a fifth goal at 11:51 of the third.
Junior Adam Janecyk (Ada, Mich.) and freshman Steve Racine (Williamsville, N.Y.) saw time in goal for the Wolverines, with Janecyk making 15 saves on 19 chances in the first two periods, before Racine relieved him in the third, stopping 12 of 13 shots. Andrew Hammond made 19 stops on 20 chances for Bowling Green.
Both teams went 0-for-4 the power play.
Michigan returns to Yost Ice Arena this weekend for a two-game series against Alaska. The series begins Friday (Jan. 11) at 7:35 p.m. [ Tickets ].
