COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Fifth-year senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) turned aside a career-high 46 shots in his return from a one-game absence, leading the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 15 USCHO/No. 15 USA Today) to a 4-0 win at Ohio State (No. 2 USCHO/No. 2 USA Today) on Friday night (Jan. 13) at Value City Arena in the final game before the Frozen Diamond Faceoff, which will be held on Sunday evening (Jan. 15, 5:05 p.m.) at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. The outdoor game will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit Plus and Big Ten Network will replay the contest on Sunday at 9 p.m.
Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.), Alex Guptill (Newmarket, Ontario) and Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) each tallied two points apiece, as Moffie and Guptill notched a goal and an assist and Merrill chipped in two helpers.
Michigan struck first midway through the opening frame when Moffie lit the lamp for the third time this season. Moffie, who positioned himself near the top of the right faceoff circle, found himself on the receiving end of a beneficial rebound off Guptill's initial try from near the far side of the goal. Moffie buried the puck as Ohio State netminder Cal Heeter battled to recover from his original save.
Michigan opened up a 2-0 lead late in the first thanks to A.J. Treais' (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) eighth tally of the season, a slapper from above the left faceoff circle. Merrill picked up his third assist of the campaign and Moffie his second assist of the night and team-leading 17th helper.
The Wolverines held the two-goal advantage through the majority of the rest of the game, but with Heeter on the bench in favor of an extra-attacker, captain Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) salted away the win for U-M with his seventh goal of the season. Guptill netted his team-best 11th goal, also on an empty net, to extend the lead to four.
David Wohlberg picked up an assist on Guptill's third-period goal; the 50th of his career and 100th point in a Wolverine uniform. Wohlberg and Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas), who earned an assist on Moffie's opening-period tally, are tied for the team lead with 22 points apiece.
Hunwick's career night was capped off by his third shutout of the season and eighth of his career. The fifth-year senior is now tied for fourth in program history (with Billy Sauer) in all-time shutouts.
The Wolverines failed to capitalize on five power-play chances but successfully killed off all four of the Buckeyes' man-advantage opportunities.
