Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On special-teams play overall ... "We were trying to play with discipline against a team that was on the edge and a team that was frustrated because they lost last night. We ended up getting -- at one point the penalties were 6-2 -- and we had to kill all those penalties against a real good power play. Whether it was goalkeeping or just everyone sucking it up and blocking shots and winning faceoffs and clearing the puck. I thought we did a lot of good things in the game. We should not have to kill that many penalties in a game like that."
On Derek DeBlois' penalty-killing effort ... "I thought all weekend he was solid. He and Travis Lynch, I thought did a great job. We use (David) Wohlberg, (Luke) Glendening, Zach Hyman and Kevin Lynch up front, and I thought they were all outstanding this weekend."
On improved defense ... "I think our whole team is better. We have been playing one or two freshmen every night on defense. With Jon Merrill in the lineup, he just upgrades our defense a lot. I think our team has more confidence right now, and we have some momentum. We are getting good goalkeeping."
On Lee Moffie's offensive production ... "We are not planning on having our defense score goals, but as you have seen in the past that all of the goals the defense have scored are important goals. Sure enough they were tonight. It is good to be able to get some offense from our defense once in a while."
U-M Junior Defenseman Lee Moffie
On why there have been so many penalties in this series ... "When you play a team like Miami, obviously the stakes are pretty high and the games are pretty emotional. A big thing we've been having trouble with all year is Shawn (Hunwick) getting bumped. And whether we're pushing him in, he's on his back and we've been getting penalties after the whistle and stuff like that."
On the first goal of the night ... "A big thing with two-on-ones that you'll notice is that they're a lot more productive on the passes made early and that's what we did and that's what we've been working on. I think he made the pass right above the blue and the goalie didn't do a great job getting over, so I had a lot of net to shoot at. But yeah, making the pass early is a nice pass."
On what the team has done to improve since mid-season ... "I think it's something like Red [Berenson] says, which is 'If you're focusing more on D when you're going out there trying to work as hard as you possibly can, the bounces kind of go your way,' and that's how we're playing. Every game we come in saying, 'We're going to work as hard as we possibly can. We're going to out-work this team, and the bounces will go our way.' And that's what has been going on."
U-M Fifth-Year Senior Goaltender Shawn Hunwick
On this weekend's defense ... "If you look at our defense they've been playing unbelievable, especially right now, our top four. They're doing a great job, and [Kevin] Clare and [Brennan] Serville did a great job tonight too, keeping guys to the outside if I gave up a rebound -- which I've been known to do here and there. You know, taking care of sticks and boxing guys out."
On what the team has done to improve since mid-season ... "We were losing a bunch of one-goal games, and now we're able to pull these games out and it's huge in the second half [of the season] to know that you can play in games like that."
