ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team scored twice in the first 10 minutes of action and got 22 saves from freshman goaltender Steve Racine (Williamsville, N.Y.) in a 4-1 victory over Ferris State before a sellout crowd of 5,800 fans on Friday night (March 1) at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines outshot the Bulldogs by a 37-23 margin and won 40-of-65 faceoffs.
Making his third straight start between the pipes, Racine posted his third consecutive CCHA victory, racking up 22 saves on 23 shots. The lone goal against came with the man advantage for Ferris State during the waning seconds of the first period.
Michigan grabbed the early lead when sophomore right wing Zach Hyman (Toronto, Ontario) scored 2:40 into the contest. Sophomore center Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) and freshman left wing Justin Selman (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) picked up assists on Hyman's fourth goal of the season. The lead grew to 2-0 as junior right winger Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, Rhode Island) notched his ninth goal of the season at 9:35 of the first period. DeBlois scored from point-blank range; freshman center Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore left wing Alex Guptill (New Market, Ontario) added assists on the scoring play.
Ferris State cut the deficit to 2-1 on a power-play goal by senior center Travis Ouellette at 16:03. The puck trickled underneath Racine's pads as he got tangled up with a Ferris State player in the crease.
Michigan scored the only goal of the second period when junior left wing Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) tallied his fourth goal of the season at 14:09. Moffatt snuck around a defender, and as he fell, stretched to his right and slid the puck past goalkeeper C.J. Motte to regain the Wolverines' two-goal advantage, 3-1. Sophomore left wing Phil Di Giuseppe (Maple, Ontario) and junior defenseman Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.) assisted on the Moffatt goal.
U-M increased its advantage to 4-1 when senior defensemen Lee Moffie's (Wallingford, Conn.) wrist shot from the point found the back of the net at 12:13. DeBlois and Guptill assisted.
The Wolverines return to the ice against the Bulldogs tomorrow night (Saturday, March 2) at 7:35 p.m. from Yost Ice Arena. Michigan will honor its seniors in a postgame ceremony.
