ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) scored two power-play goals, and alternate captain Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor, Mich.) registered three points (1g, 2a) to send the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 10 USA Hockey, No. 11 USCHO) past No. 4 Boston College (No. 4 USA Hockey, No. 4 USCHO), 3-1, on Thursday night (Oct. 10) during the regular-season opener at Yost Ice Arena.
JT Compher (Northbrook, Ill.) added two assists for the Wolverines, who improved to 21-4-5 all time in season openers under head coach Red Berenson. The Wolverines jumped out to an early at 7:25 of the first period, as Moffatt, with help from JT Compher (Northbrook, Ill.), capitalized on the first of three opening-frame Wolverine power plays.
Compher beat the BC defense down the right side of the ice and sent a cross-ice pass to Moffatt, whose one-timer into an open net gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead.
U-M had two more power-play opportunities in the period, but despite not capitalizing, hung on to a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Michigan's second goal of the night -- which proved to be the game-winner -- came off the stick of Copp when he forced a shot into to a heavily defended BC net at 5:03 of the second stanza. BC's goaltender, Brian Billett, attempted to recover the puck, but it floated behind him to bring the score to 2-0 in favor of the Maize and Blue. Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) and Michael Downing (Canton, Mich.) picked up the assists.
Just past the 10-minute mark of the second period, Boston College struck back on a shot from the point by Ian McCoshen to make the score 2-1.
The third frame began with 35 seconds left of a Wolverine power play. Moffatt nabbed his second of the night and sixth career power-play goal with one second remaining with the man-advantage to make the score 3-1. Copp, picking up his second assist of the night, sent cross-ice pass to Moffatt, who put it home for his second goal of the game. Compher registered the other assist, his second of the night.
Goaltender Steve Racine (Williamsville, N.Y.) turned away 20 of 21 shots faced, and BC's Billett stopped 29 of 32.
The Wolverines return to game action on Saturday (Oct. 12) vs. Rochester Institute of Technology at Ritter Arena in Rochester, N.Y. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
