ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team's early one-goal lead over top-ranked Miami stood for only 1:39 before the RedHawks scored the first of five unanswered goals in a 5-1 U-M loss on Saturday (Nov. 7) at Yost Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first half of the opening period, sophomore left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) deflected the puck to beat goaltender Cody Reichard on his right side at the 10:43 mark in the first period. Sophomore right wing Robbie Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) collected the puck from the right corner and then fed it back to senior defenseman Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.), who launched a shot from the right point. Wohlberg redirected it in for his first tally of the season and Michigan's first shot on goal in the game.

The RedHawks recorded the equalizer with 7:38 remaining in the opening frame during four-on-four play. Miami center Pat Cannone beat junior netminder Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) glove side on a shot from below the right faceoff dot to even the game up at one goal apiece.

Miami grabbed its first lead of the evening 7:32 into the middle frame thanks to the efforts of center Andy Miele. The junior forward dug the puck out of the left corner, sending it through a Michigan player's legs to the bottom of the faceoff circle. Miele then cut across the front of the net from left to right and fell to one knee while maintaining control of the puck to backhand it toward the net, where Hogan's kick-save attempt pushed the puck past the goal line.

The RedHawks padded their lead to make it a 3-1 game when Smith posted his first marker of the season with 5:10 remaining in the second period.

A goal from Curtis McKenzie 4:46 into the final stanza extended the RedHawks' lead to three.

With defenseman Tristin Llewellyn (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) in the box, Smith flicked a Miami rebound up into the cage for his second marker and Miami's fifth of the game. As tempers flared after the goal, a scrum broke out behind the Michigan net making for two crowded penalty boxes 6:26 into the final stanza. The heated contest featured 34 total penalties for 95 minutes as the rivals recorded a combined 147 PIM in the weekend series.

The Wolverines remain at home to host in-state rival Michigan State next Friday (Nov. 13) at Yost Ice Arena. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. and FS Detroit will broadcast the action.

Q U O T E S

Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "I'm really disappointed in our overall effort tonight. We wanted to rebound after a game in which we could have gone either way last night. Tonight in the first period we were okay and we came out of it tied. We were generating a lot of scoring chances and we didn't look like we could score and then we gave up easy goals -- two four-on-four goals. We shouldn't give those up. Their fourth goal was a bad goal on [Bryan Hogan]. We're giving up goals too easily and they are so hard to come by."

On struggles in the defensive zone ... "We need to get the puck and make better plays and we gave the puck away and turned it over. [The puck] was like a hot potato tonight. I can tell you that this is the worst game of our season. We have played eight games and this is by far our worst game. It was like we were skating in sand. I don't know whether it was preparation, I don't know if it was distractions, I don't know, but that's what it was. It wasn't just one player. I go around the locker room at the end of the game. When we win, I have a hard time finding someone who didn't have a good game. When we lose, I have a hard time finding someone who did have a good game. That was a fact tonight. Our team really has to refocus and rethink their commitment to this team and what they're going to do to help the team. We need to regroup on Monday and get back to work because this was unacceptable."

On lack of offensive production ... "We had guys that are supposed to score, not score. Our power play can usually get us back in it and you have to put your chances in. You have to try to not do too much yourself. When you worry about scoring you're not going to score. You have to worry about work ethic, you have to worry about defensive commitment, you have to worry about face offs and playing the man. As far as worrying about all those things the goals will come. If you skate around looking for the puck there is no way [you will score]. We have guys who are somewhere in between. We need to refocus on puck support and what we can do to help the team."

U-M Senior Defenseman Chris Summers
On the game ... "There is not much you can say. The outcome of the game says everything. It's a tough loss and a tough game to play in. We didn't show up to play."

On problems during the game ... "We didn't unify. [The defense] isn't working in unison with the forwards. There are small details that we need to pick up on. It starts the week of practice before the series. Everything will be addressed on Monday."

On Michigan's loss of composure in the third period ... "It was a tough game and we were outworked. Guys get frustrated. You won't burry all of your chances all the time. We need to be better composed and that starts with the upperclassmen and the seniors."

U-M Junior Forward Matt Rust
On the power play ... "I don't really know what to say. It's pretty awful right now. We've been working on it; we just have to work harder on it. We aren't moving the puck quickly enough. We try to be too cute with it and we look bad."

On the offense ... "It takes having a little bit of success to loosen up the grip a little bit. I thought we had that last weekend before playing Miami. I just don't know what it was this weekend; maybe we were trying to be too cute. I think the biggest part was you just saw our forwards get outmuscled and outworked. No one showed up to play today and we just need some hard work."
