Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game overall ... "I liked the way we started the game and I thought we sagged in the second period, and they came back like we knew they would. Then I thought we had a good third period. The all-important goal was I think (Derek) DeBlois' -- it was a big goal. Also, when we are killing a penalty and they do not score and Kevin Lynch does. So we were scoring timely goals and that was important. It is nice to see us have a strong third period at home with a lead."
On freshman goaltender Jared Rutledge ... "He has been off to a shaky start. We knew he was a good goalie inside, and it just had to come out, and it came out tonight. I thought he was quick and he looked comfortable, confident and made some key saves."
On finishing the game strong ... "It is important to finish the game strong. I thought we finished the last two games strong, but we were not at home, we were up at Northern. We came back in the third period, but tonight it was important. If you look at State's scoring their third period has been their best period."
On changing up the offensive lines ... "I told you during the week that we changed all of our lines. We just felt that we were not getting enough defense and defensive responsibility, and we needed more offense as well."
U-M Senior Forward Kevin Lynch
On playing best against Michigan State ... "I wish I could tell you. I guess I'm just fortunate to have great teammates and great line mates to set me up for easy goals. But it must be the rivalry. Everybody on our team gets up for these games. It's a great feeling."
On satisfaction of scoring goal ... "It was a little embarrassing on a couple of them. But Derek (DeBlois) and Phil (Di Giuseppe) played great tonight. They found me open a couple times and I couldn't finish, but they kept with me and I finally got one at the end there."
On motivation after coach Red Berenson's speech this week ... "We haven't had the start we wanted to. Three-and-three is not how you want to start off your season. But he knew this was the week to turn it around -- he just knew that Michigan State was the perfect opportunity to do so. We're halfway there, we just have to go in tomorrow and get three points."
U-M Junior Forward Derek DeBlois
On freshman goaltender Jared Rutledge ... "He was very good in net tonight. Was that his first win? Yeah, it's always huge to get your first win in college hockey. It's like scoring your first goal, I think. It's huge that he had a great game. I thought the defense played well tonight. Anytime we needed a big save he stepped up, which was great."
On success in third period ... "We wanted to come out fast in the third and not really give them anything. It was huge to get that goal, and we didn't look back after that. We just kept the pedal to the metal and got a few goals from (Kevin) Lynch and a few other guys and it was huge playing State."
