ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 3 USA Today, No. 3 USCHO) dropped an exhibition game, 5-4, in overtime against the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 Team on Thursday night (Dec. 5) at Yost Ice Arena. Alex Tuch scored at 2:43 of the extra frame to give Team USA the win.
The Wolverines entered the third period with a 4-2 lead, which they maintained with less than a minute remaining in the contest; but two U.S. NTDP goals -- by Shane Gersich and Ryan Hitchcock -- in the final minute evened the score and forced overtime.
The U.S. NTDP took a 1-0 lead when Jack Eichel scored on a pass from teammate Ryan Hitchcock, beating Zach Nagelvoort (Holland, Mich.) at 6:10 of the first period.
At 12:24 of the frame, on a Michigan power play, Allen took a no-look pass from Tyler Motte (St. Clair, Mich.) and scored his second goal of the night to give U-M a 2-1 lead.
The Wolverines held on to their lead until 7:18 of the middle frame, when the U.S. NTDP took advantage of a U-M defensive breakdown, and Dylan Pavelek beat Nagelvoort glove side to even up the score.
Seconds later, Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) set up Michael Downing (Canton, Mich.) at the point for a slapshot, which fluttered behind Olson to help Michigan regain the lead. The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Maize and Blue until Alex Kile (Troy, Mich.) got his stick on the puck after it hit traffic in the crease and redirected it past U.S. NTDP goaltender Collin Olson to extend the Wolverine lead to 4-2 at 13:20 of the frame.
The U.S. NTDP scored with 52 seconds remaining in the third period on Gersich's power-play goal to shorten the lead to 4-3, and then at 19:36, Hitchcock scored on a back-door play after Luke Dwyer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was impeded in front of the net by a player on each team. The goal stood after a brief review.
Tuch scored the game-winner for U.S. NTDP at 2:43 of the extra frame. Dwyer, who entered the game with less than three minutes left in regulation, made a save in overtime in his first appearance for U-M.
Nagelvoort turned aside 22 of 24 shots faced, while Olsen stopped 17 of 21 for the U.S. NTDP.
The Wolverines return to regular-season play on Wednesday (Dec. 11) when they face off against Ferris State at Yost Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
