Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "I sit up here like I am supposed to have wise words, but I really don't have any wise words. I feel like we're just making too many excuses game after game. Tonight, it was the second period and special teams were a factor again. We moved the puck pretty well on the power play at times but couldn't score and they do. Then we finally get good chances in the third, but we are down by two and it is tough to score and the puck didn't go in. Our overall team effort and our execution has to be better."
On the team's effort level ... "I can tell you that there is an effort. We are getting an effort every night, but we are not getting enough second efforts every night. Second efforts are guys that are diving in front of pucks, they are going all out, they are taking the hits, making the hits, winning all of the battles, and they are winning their races. They stand out at the end of the game. The Michigan teams that have done well have had a lot of second-effort hockey."
On overcoming some frustrations ... "The second period has been a bugaboo of late. That was a bad change and a bad turnover. We didn't get the puck in deep and we took a bad penalty. It is disappointing. Our team is trying, everybody in there is trying and excited, and they are proud to be playing for Michigan. They tried to bring their A game tonight."
U-M Senior Forward Kevin Lynch
On the struggling power play... "Whatever it is, I don't think we're getting the job done right now. I think we're just playing on the perimeter too much and not getting shots on net. We're trying to make cute passes and passing the puck through sticks and through bubble passes. We need to get the pucks on net because we're not getting enough shots."
On recent team struggles ... "We just had a long talk in the locker room about guys buying in and coming together as a team. It's easy when things are going wrong for guys to get upset with each other and to get down, but we just need to come together. The only people that can get us out of this is ourselves. We don't have any other players coming in, guys are going to be in and out of the lineup -- we just need to come together as a team."
On motivating team talk after the game ... "It was everybody. Everybody chimed in. It wasn't just one or two guys or the seniors -- pretty much everyone had their say. Things needed to be said, and I think we had a really good talk. Guys are excited about tomorrow."
On Western Michigan's recent success ... "We don't really worry about that too much. We just need to play our game and lately we haven't been doing that. It's just second-effort hockey -- that's what coach has been preaching. There is just no second effort with our team right now. That needs to change. Coming out tomorrow we need to focus on not taking as many penalties, because that's what changed the game for us today. We need to jump on them early."
