ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey head coach Red Berenson announced Friday (Jan. 6) that sophomore defenseman Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) has been reinstated to the team, effective immediately, and will play tonight when the Wolverines take on Lake Superior State. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Detroit Plus starting at 7:35 p.m. from Yost Ice Arena.
Merrill missed the first 22 games following his suspension prior to the start of the season.
"Jon's indefinite suspension has been lifted," said Berenson. "He has paid for his poor decision and is back on the team."
Merrill was named to the Preseason All-CCHA First team and has represented the United States in the last two IIHF World Junior Championships.
The 6-3, 206-pound defenseman posted 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) as a freshman in 2010-11, the fourth-best point total for a freshman defenseman in school history. He was named to the All-U.S. College Hockey Online second team and the Inside College Hockey All-Freshman team. He received conference recognition, earning All-CCHA second team and CCHA All-Rookie team honors.
