ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Forward Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team claimed the Central Collegiate Hockey Association GONGSHOW Rookie of the Week award on Monday (Feb. 4). Nieves scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and added one assist in Friday night's (Feb. 1) 3-2 victory over Michigan State. He then added one goal and one assist in Saturday's 5-2 victory over MSU. It is the first CCHA award of Nieves' career.
"He's a really dynamic skater," U-M head coach Red Berenson said. "He can just take off and leave everyone behind. He's got that burst of speed with him, and he's got the skills to go with it."
Nieves is tied for 11th in overall scoring, second in freshman points (7-14-21) and tied for seventh in overall assists (14) in the CCHA. He is also Michigan's team leader in overall (7-14-21) and conference points (8-9-17). His .149 shot percentage (seven goals on 47 shots) also leads the Wolverines in that individual category.
This week, U-M travels to Notre Dame for its weekend series. The Wolverines (10-16-2, 7-13-2-2) are currently tied for eighth place with Bowling Green in the CCHA standings. Both have 25 points, with BGSU still having two games at hand. The Irish (16-11-1, 12-7-1-1) are in third place in the CCHA with 38 points. Friday's game starts at 7:35 p.m. and will be aired on the CBS College Sports Network, while Saturday's game will have the opening faceoff at 7:05 p.m. and will be shown on Comcast (Ch. 900 in Ann Arbor).
